Student Health Centers Boost Revenue By Billing Commercial Insurance Plans

With faculty health centers facing substantial increases in the costs to offer medical care services, in addition to declines in their financing resources, many wellness center administrators are having to consider beyond their box for ways to expand budgets and keep a high quality of care for their pupil patients student care center . Because of this, more faculty health centre managers and their employees are turning to commercial insurance programs.

“Health centers at many public institutions used to get 100 percent of their funding from the state, but times are changing,” explained Jennifer Lepus, manager of college health services at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County.

The UM-BC student gym is just one of countless nationwide that have fought with state funding cutbacks. Health centers in affected schools might still obtain some funds by providing student medical insurance programs, but reimbursements from these programs – that are supplied by a small number of businesses that deal with schools to provide exclusive group rated policy to pupils – are typically inadequate to encourage a gym funding.

was that voluntary enrollment was not enough to sustain it,” explained Western Kentucky University’s Health Services Director Libby Greaney.

“If your physicians are board-certified and credentialed, they could set themselves as primary care doctors. This allows you to view community workers that are in-network together with the programs that your gym accepts. If functioning correctly, you can raise your service web and your earnings streams.”

“People are starting to see the need. They’re referring to it and fixing it,” she said. “Those in faculty health that are immune to the thought could possibly be seen as ‘old school’ if they don’t adopt the idea.”

“More and more senior vice presidents in schools are hearing about this strategy, and are providing the directive for their wellness facilities. I’d encourage gym staff to be more from the driver’s seat.”

Students without coverage either go without care, or must pay out of pocket for medical costs that are growing more expensive each year.

With the American College Health Association and some states calling for colleges and universities to provide health care coverage to all students, some schools are offering a menu of options.

For example, Lepus and her staff at UM-BC have opted to accept both a student health plan and plans from commercial carriers.

“If the objective is for every student to own policy, we could accomplish this by providing both choices,” Lepus said. “The faculty programs are less costly for individuals, but we’ve discovered that many young people nowadays are insured by their parents’ insurance plans until they turn 23 years old. That means that a large number of students have coverage through private carriers, and it seems logical that when they come in to be seen, we can bill those insurance companies.”

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City is just another instance of a wellness center that has discovered that charging to commercial insurance providers in addition to supplying a conventional student insurance coverage through the college is a win-win for both students and the gym.

“By offering both options, we have a medium-sized pool of students who are required to come to us with their insurance, but we are also affordable and convenient for students with out of state insurance who will be paying out-of-network percentages or deductibles,” stated Tiffany Smith, workplace manager/patient urge at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City’s gym, which brings about 7,000 students every year. “When we bill commercial insurance carriers, we make the process easier for our student patients, and this keeps them coming back to us in the future.”

And if they return, it means extra revenue for the gym.

Though accepting commercial insurance providers may seem overpowering, Greaney Provides a bit of information to other gym directors That Are contemplating it:

“Start small, and utilize the resources that are available to you,” she explained. “Namely, people who have gone through this either in college health or out in the community.”
